A sub ID is a common identifier used to differentiate traffic from affiliates. Generally, sub IDs are numbers, letters, or something that designates an affiliate or sub-affiliate. Because traffic types are redundant, the sub ID value is repetitive. This allows you to use sub ID reporting to identify which sub ID is performing the best. It is common practice for affiliates to place a sub ID on a tracking link.
For example, a single affiliate has three sources of traffic. The traffic comes from email, another affiliate, and simple banners. If a consumer clicks on a simple banner at a legal site, the sub ID's value might be legal to identify the source of the traffic. If the creative was emailed out, the sub ID value might be email. Therefore, when the affiliate goes to the sub ID reports, the affiliate can see which type of advertising media is receiving the best traffic and which type is converting the best.
Within an advertising network, a network might have hundreds of affiliates sending traffic to a specific campaign or offer. Some of these affiliates may also be networks themselves. The network’s affiliates are considered to be sub-affiliates to the original network. Sub IDs allow networks to distinguish between hundreds of affiliates and sub-affiliates, because the affiliate’s business information may not be available. Many of these affiliates are actually sub-affiliates and their information is kept and maintained by the direct affiliates. Sub IDs allow you to identify the affiliates and sub-affiliates by their unique sub ID.
Sub IDs provide other benefits besides identifying affiliates and sub-affiliates. Sub IDs enable you to identify which affiliate is driving traffic, because their sub ID is captured in LinkTrust. If an affiliate is driving heavy traffic through a campaign or offer, their sub ID is captured each time a single incident is received. For example, if an affiliate generates 1000 consumer clicks their sub ID is captured 1000 times.
Sub IDs also allow you to find fraud, poor quality traffic, or charge backs that might be causing problems. To identify problems, you run a report using sub IDs to determine which transactions are good and which transactions are bad. Then you can compare the bad transactions to the sub IDs and contact the affiliate running the offer and say, "Your affiliate sub ID 456 is causing bad or fraudulent traffic. Will you please turn them off?" Based on the sub ID, the affiliate will know the name of the sub-affiliate causing bad or fraudulent traffic, because the affiliate has their name and contact information. It is much easier to turn off a single affiliate then to shut off the entire campaign and turn it back on again. Sub IDs are extremely valuable for detecting fraudulent traffic.
Sub IDs also allow you to identify an affiliate or sub-affiliate performing extremely well. By using sub IDs, you can identify a high performing affiliate or sub-affiliate and say, "This affiliate is doing great. How can we get them to increase their traffic? Maybe they need a better payout?" You can then contact that affiliate or sub-affiliate and find out how to increase their traffic. Because all the personal information or demographics of sub-affiliates is proprietary, your affiliate will not give out the sub-affiliate's contact information. This prevents them from being cut out of the middle.
To add a sub ID, do one of the following:
For example, http://[TrackingDomain]/click.track?CID=XXXX&AFID=XXXX&ADID=XXXX&SID=Sub_ID_Here
For example, an SEO tracking URL might look like the following:
http://[TrackingDomain]/click.track/CID/XXXX/AFID/XXXX/ADID/XXXX/SID/Place_Sub_ID_Here
